The 2015 Toyota Yaris returns with a flamboyant new look, and is heavily advertised across billboards in the UAE. We get a metallic orange hatchback to test for a few days.
While the old exterior was shy and kind of like a big ball, the new one is not just bolder, its far more flashy and glitzy. The front trapezoidal design protrudes out brashly, announcing its presence. New headlight units incorporate some attractive detailing and on SE models include a new fog lamp design.
Unlike its competition, Yaris engineers insist on offering either a 1.3 or 1.5 liter engine that gives roughly about 107 horsepower from an outdated 4 speed transmission. Others offer a 5 or 6 speed automatic or the CVT which is also more fuel efficient but not the Yaris. Its quite nippy from the stop start mostly because it's a lighter car, but you cross 3rd gear and it will struggle to get to 4th.
Overall, the interior impresses. It's a straightforward layout, that gives easy access to everything you need. The dash has horizontal, shelf-like lines and the controls are simple, cheerful, and easy to understand. There's also a large cohort of built-in storage spaces, in the form of trays, cupholders, bins, and the like-including a long tray at the bottom of the dash for the passenger.
The new Yaris is far more quiet inside, giving a better experience, but whether you choose the 3 or 5 door hatchback, this is a pretty small car inside. This size makes it maneuverable and easy to park in tight city streets, but rear-seat space suffers as a result. The front seats are very comfortable and supportive, but maybe a bit difficult for taller passengers.
The Yaris has always been the greyhound that gets the job done. Its one of the most reliable cars on the road and with a new exterior and better interior, it will find fans in the UAE. However, if they improve on the performance and space issues, they'll have a brilliant car on the road!
